Seattle Community Service Day 2019

This year we are celebrating the 35th anniversary of Windermere Community Service Day! Although many of our brokers support local organizations individually and through the Windermere Foundation year-round, Community Service Day is a special chance for brokers and staff to gather to volunteer together as an office.

Read below to hear how our Seattle offices made a positive impact at their project sites this year:

One of our greatest days of the year is Windermere Community Service Day and we couldn’t have worked with a more fun, giving and community-minded group of people. We spent the day at Green Lake Elementary School working on landscaping and organizational projects to create a safe and clean playground area by removing ivy and blackberries along the fence lines, sweeping the excess bark and painting communal benches. Our team also helped organize classrooms to get them in the best shape for students! Thank you all and a huge thanks to the incredible teachers, administrators and PTA at Green Lake Elementary!

BALLARD

BALLARD NEIGHBORHOOD

Our office set out on the streets of downtown Ballard and the brewery district to collect 1.5 miles of garbage and waste. With the help of J & A Hauling, we were able to collect and get rid of nearly 50 bags of trash. We also teamed up with an Adopt-a-Street group and Limback Lumber, who generously donated supplies for this project. Keeping things close to home is very important to our team and we are grateful for all of the help we received from local companies in our community.

This Community Service Day our office worked shoulder to shoulder down at “The Brig” in Magnuson Park with the University Family YMCA. We helped them get their facilities ready for an amazing summer program for local youth. We washed buses, painted a WELCOME banner, set up a large tent, organized closets and painted a room four different colors! It was an amazing day!

Our project this year was at Julia’s Place in Madrona – a night shelter for families and children experiencing homelessness. Our tasks included assembling a preparation table for the kitchen and several storage cabinets for dry goods, painting a bathroom, laundry area and high-use play area, and deep cleaning and organizing the entire area. In addition to our day of work, we donated $1,000 for the purchase of the table, cabinets and supplies.

ATLANTIC STREET CENTER

Our project was at Atlantic Street Center, an organization that was founded in 1910. We had a wonderful turn-out of volunteers! Our office spent time gardening, building a fence, cleaning and organizing two kitchens, cleaning one of the resource rooms, coordinating packets for clients, cleaning and organizing the garage, creating original art work for their counseling rooms and making numerous runs to the dump. Overall, it was a very exhilarating and fun day and our team was thrilled at the chance to get to know each other better.

Atlantic Street Center is an award-winning agency providing services to children, youth, and their families for over 100 years. As one of our region’s oldest non-profit social service agencies, they work to help families and communities raise healthy, successful children and youth through direct services and advocacy for social justice and equity. Serving over 5000 clients over the past year, this great organization provides wrap-around services including education, family support, and behavioral health counseling to the low-income minority populations of King and Pierce Counties.

Our office worked at two Mary’s Place locations this year. We had a small team working at the Shoreline location deep cleaning the front rooms and the kitchen as well as sorting food in the kitchen. Our second location was the North Seattle location, where another group sorted donations and worked on yard work and weeding.

CAPITOL HILL

JUBILEE WOMEN'S CENTER

We worked with the Jubilee Women’s Center’s three houses on 18th Ave E in Capitol Hill. Jubilee’s residential program gives women the tools and resources they need to continue down the path to success from holistic healing, employment preparation, stable housing and more. Our team weeded and freshened up two of the homes that have previously been landscaped. At the third house, we landscaped the front yard and built a privacy fence in the backyard.

For our office’s Community Service Day we worked with the Phinney Neighborhood Association/Greenwood Senior Center on a few different projects. We gardened, painted the Senior Center’s kitchen and drove to 24 different households with seniors in the neighborhood and hauled away junk and Goodwill items for them. We had a blast working with this great organization for Community Service Day! A big shout out to Dave Hynden, the Greenwood Senior Center, and the Phinney Neighborhood Association for organizing everything!

For this year’s Community Service Day, our team did yard work at Sacajawea Elementary School in Seattle. We bought 15 yards of mulch to spread out on their planter beds, pulled weeds, swept, and did other general yard clean-up. Thank you to everyone for all the hard work!

Thank you to everyone who participated and donated to these incredible organizations this year; we’re already excited for Community Service Day 2020!
